What is a CAP Pilot?
Pilots are an essential part of all the programs in Civil Air Patrol. CAP pilots are authorized to fly CAP aircraft for personal currency and on offial CAP missions such as search and rescue, cadet orientation flights, homeland security, and more.
Requirements
In order to become a CAP pilot, you will need the following:
- Current membership card
- Completion of Level I (see our new member page for details)
- An FAA Private Pilot Certificate (or higher)
- A current FAA Medical (3rd class or higher)
- Become familiar with CAPR 60-1, CAP Flight Management
- Referenced publications are available on the national web site.
- Complete an Airplane Questionnaire for each aircraft you will fly
- Complete the CAPF 5 Airplane exam
- Complete a CAPF 5 checkride with a CAP check pilot

Training
Once you are qualified as a CAP pilot, you can work towards becoming a mission pilot. This is part of the emergency services program and you'll first need to get your 101 card and follow the training for mission scanner and then mission pilot.
